Mesopredator

Mesopredator is a mid-ranking predator in a food web, typically feeding on smaller animals while being preyed upon by larger predators (apex predators). Examples include foxes, raccoons, snakes, and medium-sized fish. Mesopredators play an important ecological role by helping regulate prey populations, such as rodents or insects. When apex predators decline or disappear, mesopredator populations often increase; a phenomenon called mesopredator release, which can disrupt ecosystems by causing overpredation on smaller species. Thus, mesopredators serve as crucial links in maintaining ecological balance between top predators and lower trophic levels.
