Grasshoppers are herbivorous insects belonging to the order Orthoptera. Recognized by their long hind legs, they are powerful jumpers and often produce sounds (stridulation) by rubbing their legs against their wings. Typically green or brown, grasshoppers use camouflage to avoid predators. They feed on grasses, crops, and other vegetation, sometimes causing significant agricultural damage in large numbers. Grasshoppers undergo incomplete metamorphosis, developing from egg to nymph to adult without a pupal stage. Found worldwide in grasslands, fields, and forests, they play an important role in ecosystems as both consumers of plants and prey for birds, reptiles, and mammals.
