A historical term referring to the regions of the world known to Europeans before the discovery of the Americas; primarily Europe, Asia, and Africa. The term is often used in contrast with the “New World” (the Americas) and is commonly applied in historical, anthropological, biological, and geographical contexts. In biology, it also distinguishes species native to Europe, Asia, and Africa (Old World species) from those originating in the Americas (New World species).
