The country expanded westward in the 19th century, underwent a civil war (1861-1865) over slavery and the status of states, emerged as a major world power in the early-to-mid 20th century, and since the Cold War has been a dominant global actor politically, economically and militarily.
Current Day:
Today the United States is a highly developed country with a diverse population and economy. It remains one of the world’s largest economies, key players in technology, finance, innovation, and global diplomacy.
Politically it is a constitutional federal republic made up of 50 states plus a federal district. Socially and culturally it is marked by significant diversity of ethnicity, religion and immigration.
