Alaudidae

Larks are singing birds in the family Alaudidae. They are known for their beautiful songs and interesting behaviors. This family of birds can be found all over the world, with the most species located in Africa. They thrive in different habitats, including savannas and grasslands.

In North America, the horned lark (Eremophila alpestris) is the only member of this family. It has distinctive tufted feathers on its head and can live in many places, from open fields to farmlands. In Australia, the only lark is Horsfield’s bush lark (Mirafra javanica), which is often seen searching for food in grassy areas.

Larks prefer dry and open regions like plains and steppe. They usually build their nests on the ground. When people mention “lark,” they often mean the Eurasian skylark (Alauda arvensis). This bird is famous for its delightful songs and soaring displays, making it a symbol of happiness and celebration in many parts of Europe and beyond.
