Haematopodidae is a family of wading birds commonly known as oystercatchers. They are medium-sized, stocky shorebirds with long, strong, orange or red bills adapted for prying open mollusks, especially oysters and mussels. Found along coasts and estuaries worldwide, they typically have striking black, white, or pied plumage and loud, piping calls.
