Welcome to Photography In Focus. In this guide, we have been asked by the folks at Dehancer to review their new software, Dehancer Desktop. Whilst Dehancer has been kind enough to provide us with access to this new software, this review is completely objective and unbiased.
So, what sets Dehancer Desktop apart from the Dehancer plugins for Photoshop, Lightroom, Capture One, and Affinity Photo? The main difference is that Dehancer Desktop is a standalone app. If you’ve used the Photo Plugin before, you’ll find the Desktop App’s interface looks very familiar.
The layout is basically the same, with film presets on the left and detailed adjustment settings on the right. You can also open files directly in Dehancer. It lets you create project folders and add your images to them, which is handy for organizing client projects and for batch-processing images to maintain a consistent style. It goes without saying that you can export your work to any folder on your computer, making it easy to share with clients or upload to social media.
Conclusions
Ok, so what is Dehancer Desktop, and who should use it?
First, I think Dehancer is more than just a film tool now—it’s a full workflow option that puts film aesthetics first, even over editing flexibility. Still, it’s not a full replacement for Lightroom or Photoshop. The file management could be better, and the RAW settings panel could use some improvements. Also, you can’t do things like targeted tonal corrections or remove blemishes yet.
So, you’ll want your images to be in good shape before using Dehancer. You might still need other tools for some editing tasks. That said, it’s easy to ruin a good photo in Lightroom or Photoshop by over-processing or over-sharpening.
Dehancer Desktop is a specialized Raw editor focused on film emulation. The presets are based on real films from the analog era. If you want something different from the usual tools and prefer a photography-first approach over digital tricks, you’ll like this tool.
